Police and fire officials will now have the “bear essentials” to help children at emergencies, thanks to the Grenada Junior Auxiliary Kid Kare Bear Program.
Interim Grenada Police Chief James Fox and Grenada Fire Chief Herman Simpson were presented with 150 teddy bears last week.
According to Kid Kare Committee Chair Dawn Traugott, the bears are for younger children who are involved in accidents, fires and other emergencies, especially domestic calls.
“When you have a child involved in an emergency situation, they will always be extremely scared and confused,” she said. “Officers and firefighters will be able to give those kids these teddy bears as something to hold onto until they know they are safe.”
She said this was the first year the Junior Auxiliary has sponsored a program like Kid Kare.
“We hope we are able to continue it,” she said.
Chief Fox appreciated the bears, and said that they will be spread evenly through the 14 patrol cars for emergency calls involving children.
“We don’t come in contact with kids very often, but the police force knows this will be a great asset to keeping the calm and peace at emergency calls,” he said. “A teddy bear is such a small thing, but it can really help when the situation calls for it.”
Simpson thanked the Junior Auxiliary for the bears.
“We will be able to have these in the trucks and know that they will last a long time,” he said.
